After watching a number of old style films, along with some Ken Burns films, I was interested in how the texture and subtle motion of the imagery made them seem more alive. What if we could apply classic cinematic texture and movement to static web images?
This project was a quick stab at that idea. Two variables are at play:
- A steady size fluctuation at the rate of the human breath. (the Ken Burns influence)
- Random color noise to add interpretive variation. (the film noir influence)
This experiment showed me that there is room to breath life into otherwise static imagery on the web, and I think there’s room for iteration to make it more efficient and leverage new CSS properties like filters and masks.
Additionally, since this experiment, 3D images have become a thing in places like Facebook, and they achieve a similar goal.
Here’s the GitHub link if you’d like to iterate.
